Quilt’s finished size: 150 x 150 cm (60” x 60”)

General Instructions:

The measurements given for cutting include seam allowances of 7 mm (1/4”), rounded to 15 mm (1/2”) for two seams. Make any necessary adjustments.
The measurements in the explanatory diagrams do not include seam allowances.
For the templates, add a seam allowance of 7 mm (1/4”) all around.

Cutting key:

: Square cut on one diagonal

For those preferring the traditional cutting method, note that you will find:

  • the templates on the pattern sheet (or at the end of the project); add seam allowances to them
  • the quantities in bold in the Cutting section of each step

Reminder of the necessary supplies for the project:

The fabrics are 110 cm (44”) wide.

  • Beige fabric, for the background:
    • 3.7 m (4yd)
  • Assortment of many coloured fabrics, for the front of the houses:
    • o.2 m (11/3yd) total
  • Blue fabric, for the front of the castle:
    • 25 cm (1/4yd)
  • Assortment of many light-coloured fabrics, for doors and windows:
    • 30 cm (12”) total
  • Assortment of grey and brown fabrics, for roofs and tree trunks:
    • 70 cm (3/4yd)
  • Assortment of 6 or 7 different green fabrics, for trees:
    • 45 cm (1/2yd) total, including one measuring 10 cm (4”) for part 3
  • Orange fabric, for the pinwheels:
    • 25 cm (1/4yd)
  • Green fabric, for the zig-zagging borders:
    • 20 cm (8”)
  • Backing and batting: 160 x 160 cm (64” x 64”)

PART 9 – 1 M block and 1 N block

Cutting and Assembling:

Diagram 25:

For the M block, cut:

  • From one fabric from the coloured assortment:
    • 6 M2 rectangles measuring 6.5 x 8.5 cm (21/2” x 31/2”)
    • 1 M3 rectangle measuring 8.5 x 9 cm or an M3 square with (31/2” x 31/2”) sides
    • 1 M4 rectangle measuring 5.5 x 39 cm (2” x 151/2”)
    • 1 M9 rectangle measuring 11.5 x 26.5 cm (41/2” x 101/2”)
    • 1 M10 rectangle measuring 6.5 x 18.5 cm (21/2” x 71/2”)
    • 1 M12 rectangle measuring 6.5 x 36.5 cm (21/2” x 141/2”)
    • 1 square with 5 cm (17/8”) sides,  to obtain a total of 1 M13 triangle
  • From the light-coloured assortment:
    • In a first fabric:
      • 10 M1 rectangles measuring 4 x 5 cm (11/2” x 2”)
    • In a second fabric:
      • 10 M1 rectangles measuring 4 x 5 cm (11/2” x 2”)
    • In a third fabric:
      • 1 M10 rectangle measuring 6.5 x 18.5 cm (21/2” x 71/2”)
    • In a fourth fabric:
      • 1 M11 rectangle measuring 4 x 23.5 cm (11/2” x 91/2”)
      • 1 M14 piece
  • From the grey assortment:
    • In a first fabric:
      • 1 M5 rectangle measuring 2.5 x 39 cm (1” x 151/2”)
    • In a second fabric:
      • 1 M6 triangle
    • In a third fabric:
      • 1 M7 piece
  • In the beige fabric:
    • 1 M8 triangle and 1 M8’ triangle (reverse M8 template)
    • 1 M11 rectangle measuring 4 x 23.5 cm (11/2” x 91/2”)
    • 1 square with 5 cm (17/8”) sides,  to obtain a total of 1 M13 triangle

Sew an M1 rectangle from the first light-coloured fabric, with an M1 rectangle from the second light-coloured fabric. Repeat this assembly head-to-tail, to obtain a total of 5 windows.
Sew 3 M2 rectangles and 3 windows while alternating them. Add the M3 rectangle on the right.
Add the M4 and M5 rectangles above the previous assembly.
Sew the M6 triangle with the M7 piece. Add an M8 triangle and a M8’ triangle on each side. Sew this assembly above the previous one to obtain Unit 1.

Diagram 26:

Sew 3 M2 rectangles and the 2 last windows, while alternating them. Sew the M9 rectangle beneath.
Add the light-coloured M10 rectangle and the coloured M10 rectangle on the left to obtain Unit 2.

Diagram 27:

Sew the light-coloured M11 rectangle, as well as the beige M11 rectangle on the right of Unit 1.
Sew the M12 rectangle above Unit 2. Sew the M13 triangles above the M14 piece and add this assembly on the right of the previous assembly.
Sew these assemblies together to obtain the M block.

Diagram 28:

For the N block, cut:

  • From the beige fabric:
    • 6 squares with 8.5 cm (33/8) ” sides,  to obtain a total of 12 N1 triangles
    • 2 N3 rectangles measuring 6 x 13.5 cm (21/2” x 51/2”)
  • In one fabric from the green assortment:
    • 6 N2 triangles
  • In one fabric from the grey assortment:
    • 1 N4 rectangle measuring 4.5 x 13.5 cm (11/2” x 51/2”)

Sew 6 times a N1 triangle on each side of a N2 triangle. Sew these assemblies together.
Sew a N3 rectangle on each side of a N4 rectangle.
Sew these assemblies together to obtain the N block.

Diagram 29:

  • In the beige fabric, cut:
    • 1 I rectangle measuring 5.5 x 44 cm (21/2” x 171/2”)
    • 1 J rectangle measuring 4 x 49.5 cm (11/2” x 201/2”)
    • 1 K rectangle measuring 4.5 x 49.5 cm (11/2” x 201/2”)
    • 1 A rectangle measuring 6.5 x 61.5 cm (21/2” x 241/2”)

Sew the I rectangle above and the J and K rectangles on each side of the M block. Add the N block on the right and the A rectangle beneath.
This 9th part should measure 54.5 x 61.5 cm (221/2” x 241/2”), with seam allowances.
