Quilt Along 2023 – ‘HOMETOWN’ by Diane Knott – Part 3

Quilt’s finished size: 150 x 150 cm (60” x 60”)

General Instructions:

The measurements given for cutting include seam allowances of 7 mm (1/4”), rounded to 15 mm (1/2”) for two seams. Make any necessary adjustments.
The measurements in the explanatory diagrams do not include seam allowances.
For the templates, add a seam allowance of 7 mm (1/4”) all around.

Cutting key:

: Square cut on one diagonal

For those preferring the traditional cutting method, note that you will find:

  • the templates on the pattern sheet (or at the end of the project); add seam allowances to them
  • the quantities in bold in the Cutting section of each step

Necessary supplies for the project:

The fabrics are 110 cm (44”) wide.

  • Beige fabric, for the background:
    • o 3.7 m (4yd)
  • Assortment of many coloured fabrics, for the front of the houses:
    • o 1.2 m (11/3yd) total
  • Blue fabric, for the front of the castle:
    • o 25 cm (1/4yd)
  • Assortment of many light-coloured fabrics, for doors and windows:
    • o 30 cm (12”) total
  • Assortment of grey and brown fabrics, for roofs and tree trunks:
    • o 70 cm (3/4yd)
  • Assortment of 6 or 7 different green fabrics, for trees:
    • o 45 cm (1/2yd) total, including one measuring 10 cm (4”) for part 3
  • Orange fabric, for the pinwheels:
    • o 25 cm (1/4yd)
  • Green fabric, for the zig-zagging borders:
    • o 20 cm (8”)
  • Backing and batting: 160 x 160 cm (64” x 64”)

PART 3 – 4 D blocks and 1 E block

Cutting and Assembling:

Diagram 9:

For each of the 4 D blocks, cut:

  • From one fabric from the coloured assortment:
    • 3 D1 rectangles, measuring 4 x 5.5 cm (11/2” x 2”)
    • 2 D4 rectangles, measuring 5.5 x 23.5 cm (2” x 91/2”)
  • From one fabric from the light-coloured assortment:
    • 2 D2 squares, with 5.5 cm (2”) sides
    • 1 D3 rectangle, measuring 5.5 x 8 cm (2” x 31/2”)
  • From the beige fabric:
    • 1 D5 triangle and 1 D5’ triangle (reverse D5 template)
  • From one fabric from the grey assortment:
    • 1 D6 triangle

Sew 3 D1 rectangles and 2 D2 squares while alternating them. Add the D3 rectangle below.
Sew a D4 rectangle on each side of the resulting assembly.
Sew a D5 triangle and a D5’ triangle on each side of a D6 triangle.
Sew these assemblies together to obtain a D block.
Make 4 D blocks in total.

Diagram 10:

For the E block, cut:

  • From the beige fabric:
    • 2 E1 rectangles measuring 5 x 6.5 cm (2” x 21/2”)
    • 5 squares with 7.5 cm (27/8”) sides,  to make 10 E3 triangles
  • From one fabric from the grey assortment:
    • 1 E2 rectangle measuring 4.5 x 6.5 cm (11/2” x 21/2”)
  • From one fabric from the green assortment:
    • 5 E4 triangles

Sew an E1 rectangle on each side of the E2 rectangle.
Sew, 5 times, an E3 triangle on each side of an E4 triangle.
Sew these assemblies together to obtain the E block.

Diagram 11:

  • From the beige fabric:
    • 1 A strip measuring 6.5 x 61.5 cm (21/2” x 241/2”)
    • 1 D rectangle measuring 3.5 x 31.5 cm (21/2” x 121/2”)

Sew in this order: one D block, the E block, the D rectangle, and 3 D blocks.
Add the A strip beneath.
This 3rd part should measure 36.5 x 61.5 cm (141/2” x 241/2”), with seam allowances.
