A holiday sewing project with a little embroidery !

Hello everyone,

This august for Pat and I means the end of our GR4 adventure…

We are left with a mix of soreness, satisfaction and a strong “We’ll do it again” vibe, deep in our souls.

I’ll have to wait till the end of this month before seeing Royan, the Ocean, the Wild Coast with it’s dunes… And our children who will welcome us after no less than 1500 kms (932 miles) by foot!

This beach scene just came naturally to me, with it’s sign proudly displaying “Royan” and the beacons, indicating the various hiking tracks, all striped in red and white.

Nice holidays and don’t forget to go for walks… it’s good for your health!!!

This project measures 10 x 14 cm (4’’ x 5½’’) and will be positioned above the month of July:

Materials

• Old bed sheet : 10 x 10 cm (4’’x 4’’)
• Scraps of blue tulle, of blue checkered fabric, of old lace
• Scraps of fabrics : white, light grey and darker grey for the seagull
• Scraps of fabrics light brown and darker brown for the sign
• Embroidery cotton: cream, black, white, orange, blue, red
• Double sided iron-on veil
• Steam iron

Instructions

1) As shown in the picture, place the checkered blue fabric, the tulle and the lace on the bedsheet. Place them above July’s project. Fix them together using a cream broken-rib stitch. We’ll come back to it later.

2) Place the sign using a traditional method. Embroid “Royan” (or any other destination you may think of…).

3) On the paper side of the double sided iron-on veil, place the 7 pieces making up the seagull (by clicking here, you’ll obtain the patterns). I’m presenting them in the inverted way, so that they’ll be facing the right way once you’ll assemble the bird. Roughly cut around said pieces, then use the iron to fix them properly at the back of the appropriate textile. Carefully cut each one by following it’s pattern.

4) Remove the paper from the double sided veil and fix the pieces into place in numerical order. The seagull’s wing will protrude from the top of the bed sheet. Make a running or straight primitiv stitch around every piece.

5) Embroid the bird’s eye with a running stitch and it’s outline with a back stitch, using a piece of black cotton. Use the orange cotton for the beak and legs. On the sign, I added GR’s red and white arrows.

6) To replicate the waves, I did a whipped running stitch on the lace beneath, using some blue cotton. I added some blue broken-rib stitches on the tulle. If needed, you can add cream coloured broken-rib stitches on the lace, the bed sheet and the blue fabric.
