Japanese artist Suzuko Koseki signs her first book at Quiltmania Editions. Urban Quilts: My Life with Patchwork Quilts is a fantastically contemporary book of everyday items designed with recycled fabrics, floral prints and old clothes.
Her use of form and color gives a modern touch to each project. Choose from an array of various projects: accessories, bags, pouches, card holders, key holders, backpacks, cushions, coasters…each one an ingenious combination of modern and vintage.
Suzuko has included several traditional quilts, including a breathtaking Cathedral Window in blue and white, playing with a variety of color palettes so that there’s a project for everyone. Urban Quilts is the perfect harmony between the past and the present!
About Suzuko Koseki
![]() |
Suzuko Koseki is a Japanese artist and quilter who began her career in fashioni design. She earned her degrees from the Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo and the Cultural Clothing Academy. With the birth of her first son in 1978, she decided to try quilting and learned from a variety of teachers, notably Chuck Nohara who taught her the importance of color, creativity and imagination.
Suzuko’s style is unique and cannot be categorized! With her use of bright, colorful and vivid fabrics, prints with old marketing ads and text, one could call Suzuko a modern quilter. However, she considers herself to be quite traditional when it comes to her composition designs. Suzuko, without a doubt, interprets tradition in a profoundly modern way and with a splash of vintage! Suzuko is an internationally renowned artist and in 2020, the Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival curated a beautiful retrospective dedicated to her work. We also featured her in our most recent Simply Moderne n°23 issue. Founder of La Clochette, Suzuko teaches patchwork and quilting in three of the most prestigious schools in Tokyo. She has also been collaborating with Yuwa for over 10 years, designing numerous fabric collections for this Japanese company. |
