Welcome ABOARD from Muriel Gendreau-Chabannesarah
Welcome ABOARD is a quilt from the new Simply Moderne N°33
Muriel Gendreau-Chabanne has created a quilt that’s easy for beginners to make, using squares and triangles.
But what’s interesting about this quilt is the origin of Muriel’s inspiration: the international nautical alphabet.
To create the code, a series of international agencies assigned 26 code words so that the names of the letters and numbers would be as distinct as possible, to be easily understood by those exchanging messages. For A it’s Alpha, for B it’s Bravo, for C it’s Charlie, and so on. This is the International Phonetic Alphabet.
This alphabet was later adapted in the form of flags, the nautical alphabet.
Muriel was inspired by nautical flags to create her Welcome ABOARD pattern.
On Muriel’s blog Verveine & Lin, you can read all about her reflections and color choices, and in Simply Moderne N°33 you’ll find the explanations for making this Welcome ABOARD quilt.
